The Semi Dice Sentinel
1976: A Very Good Year
July 1996, Volume 5, Number 2
How many world leaders will turn 20 years old in 1996? The answer: one.
Semi Dice, the world leader in tie distribution, was born on June 1, 1976. What was then a small company with a handful of product lines in an emerging market has turned into the leader among die processors. However, one thing that hasn't changed is Semi Dice's commitment to its primary goal: "To be the most service minded and responsive die processor in the industry."
Let's go back to the beginning of Semi Dice, when the young and ambitious Jerry Flynt saw the need for a die distributor for the emerging hybrid market. He started the company in his garage in Long Beach, Calif.
Operating the company out of Jerry's garage worked for a while. However, as Semi Dice grew, it became obvious Jerry's car should get its home back and the company should move out of the garage. Semi Dice Headquarters moved first to an office in Long Beach and then to its current location in Los Alamitos, Calif. in late 1979.
The late '70's and early '80's was a time of rapid expansion for Semi Dice. In 1978, Richard Hammond opened Semi Dice North. Richard later moved to Southern California to become president. At the same time, Ralph Casper took over the reins at Semi Dice North. Ralph retired from Semi Dice earlier this year. In 1980, Semi Dice East opened. The Hi Rel Division opened in 1982 to serve the military market. In 1984, Semi Dice Long Island opened. To this day, Semi Dice remains the only die processor with multiple facilities.
Of course, a company is nothing without its people. Semi Dice started out as a one-man shop and has grown to employ almost 60 people. Throughout the years, many people have worked hard to shape Semi Dice into the leader it is today. Bill Marvel joined Semi Dice in 1982 and was promoted to vice president, division manager for the North region in 1995. Walter Becker also joined the company in 1988 and was promoted to vice president, division manager for the Long Island region in 1991.
Mitch Myers joined Semi Dice in 1986 as vice president, division manager for the Southern California region. In 1987, he became executive vice president and chief operating officer. In 1990, he was promoted to position, president and COO.
"The microelectronics industry has changed dramatically sine Semi Dice first opened its doors, " he said. "Twenty years ago, very few people had ever heard of microelectronics. Today, with the prevalence of personal computers and the increasing use of technology in all industries, more people are technologically savvy."
"Semi Dice has been able to weather the changes in the microelectronics industry by offering a broad range of products and at the same time has remained focused on quality, service and value. This is how we have become the fastest growing domestic wafer processor and die distributor."
While nobody can predict the future, they can speculate based on the past. In an industry as fast-paced as microelectronics, Semi Dice has stood the test of time. The Semi Dice formula for success that has worked for the past twenty years is sure to make them prosper in the future as well."
